Things you don’t see as much of anymore
One of my favourite newsletters, The Lindy Newsletter, has a topic series the author, dearly known as “Lindyman”, writes across platforms all around the things that were once prevalent in western society but are now becoming less common.
We're sifting through a societal filter, every one of us, right now. It's a relentless process, stripping away layers of the past – decades, centuries even – those things we grew up with, took for granted. But seeing what's slipping through our fingers, that's the tough part. We're so caught up in the now, the immediate, that recognizing what's being lost becomes a nearly impossible feat.
Some of the things Lindyman has pointed out that you don’t see anymore:
Family photos in the workplace - the days of having your own assigned deck and/or cubicle, let alone office, are truly numbered. Lindyman points out that even President Biden keeps family photos behind his desk. But “like so many things in this world, the office has metamorphosed into something cold and clinical, akin to the confines of a doctor’s examination room.”
People who don’t always have to use the bathroom - I definitely can admit to being someone constantly running to the bathroom because I do drink a lot of water. I literally need to keep a bottle of water near me at all times which is probably a bit psychotic. People are a lot more hydration-aware these days, plus those of us lucky enough to live in countries with drinkable tap water really can just keep on chugging all day long. The downside is constantly needing to pee. I never seem to learn my lesson before going to the cinema NOT to drink before or during.
